WNB.rb December 2021 Meetup

This month's meetup will feature talks from Ce Managing and Erica Calogero! Action Cable Overview: Rails 5 introduced us to Action Cable. Since then, libraries to implement real-time Rails (like Hotwire and StimulusReflex) were built on top of it. But, what really is Action Cable and what problems does it solve? Ce Manalang began building web applications in Ruby before she knew what she was doing. She fell in love with it eventually - soon it was too late to stop. Her current work includes helping maintain and develop features for a local startup building blockchain-based products and services. She lives in the Philippines. ----- Jazz Gestures: An AI Dancing Game: Enter a cyber-world where you become your own jazz choreographer - with a futuristic twist. This interactive video artwork blends a frame-by-frame examination of the dancing body and, using stochastic processes, inspired by human brain cells, it matches and filters the authentic moves in response to the viewer's own poses and gestures. The most physical of art forms blends with artificial neural networks, the viewer and the AI each becoming the other's teacher: a meeting-point of machine and human learning. Erica Calogero is a full-stack bootcamp graduate and creative coder, with a background in architecture and research. She designs objects, furniture, patterns and code. Erica spends her spare time knitting, coding and gardening. Currently making plans for the 4th industrial revolution, which include weaving with post-agricultural waste and weeds, and designing for CAD-CAM and creating engaging digital experiences. She also develops websites.

WNB.rb’s goal is to support a more diverse group of people to make significant and meaningful contributions to the Ruby world. It is a monthly meetup with technical talks where the speakers and audience members are all women and non-binary people. We hope to provide a brave space for tenured speakers, first-time speakers and everyone in between to interact in a technical capacity. This community seeks to enable developers to grow their technical skill sets and confidence, further promoting inclusion of women and non-binary folks within the Ruby community. What happens during each meetup? On the last Tuesday of every month at 12pm EDT, we host two speakers to give technical talks on Ruby and the related ecosystem. The talks are be 15 minutes each, with 5 minutes Q&A afterwards. Towards the end of the meetups, we have a few minutes where folks can optionally stay online to chat. The meetups last one hour, and we post recordings of each talk afterwards. This meetup will forever be virtual! I’m interested in speaking at a future meetup, how can I do that? We are so glad!
